Title: City of Ghosts

Author: Victoria Schwab

Genre: Middle Grade Paranormal

Published: 2018

Pages: 285

My Rating: 3/5 stars

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Cassidy Blake’s parents are The Inspectres, a (somewhat inept) ghost-hunting team. But Cass herself can REALLY see ghosts. In fact, her best friend, Jacob, just happens to be one.
When The Inspectres head to ultra-haunted Edinburgh, Scotland, for their new TV show, Cass—and Jacob—come along. In Scotland, Cass is surrounded by ghosts, not all of them friendly. Then she meets Lara, a girl who can also see the dead. But Lara tells Cassidy that as an In-betweener, their job is to send ghosts permanently beyond the Veil. Cass isn’t sure about her new mission, but she does know the sinister Red Raven haunting the city doesn’t belong in her world. Cassidy’s powers will draw her into an epic fight that stretches through the worlds of the living and the dead, in order to save herself.

Hello Everyone,

welcome to my spoiler free review of City of Ghosts, by Victorian Schwab. This is a middle grade paranormal fantasy book set in Edinburgh, and since I am currently living here I had to read it. I actually listened to it on audiobook, and I really enjoyed the experience. Because this is a middle grade story, I have decided to freely write my thoughts without going through the usual review template.

The plot of this book is quite simple: Cassidy moves to Edinburgh and soon finds out that the veil, that is, the line between life and the ghost dimension, is way thinner in the Scottish capital, and she has to learn how to deal with this.

I particularly enjoyed the descriptions of the city, I know that Victoria lives here part of the year. I loved the descriptions of the Castle, of Grassmarket and of Geryfriars, and because I live here I could picture it so well in my mind.

I gave this book 3/5 stars just because middle grade is not my genre, but it doesn’t mean that it isn’t well written. In fact I would recommend this book to anyone who feels like reading a spooky story set in one of the most fascinating cities in Europe. I have read A Darker Shade of Magic also by V.E. Schwab, but I am having a hard time getting into the second book for some reason. I think I just need to push through.

Please let me know if you have read City of Ghosts and what you thought about it.

Until next time,

Keky
